Constituted as 478th Fighter Group on 12 Oct 1943. Activated on 1 Dec
1943. Assigned to Fourth AF. After a delay in obtaining personnel and
equipment, the group began operations in Mar 1944 as a replacement
training unit, using P-39 aircraft. Disbanded on 31 Mar 1944.
Reconstituted and redesignated 478th Fighter Group (Air Defense), on 11
Dec 1956. Activated on 8 Feb 1957. Assigned to Air Defense Command.
