My interest in the history of the Army Air Corps was first initiated after hearing stories of my two Grandpas' experiences during World War 2 and of their many bombing and transport missions over Germany and the CBI.
My interest and one of the impressions that I portray is in honor of my mom's dad, Major Samuel Kemp Clifford who was a bomber pilot of the B-17 "Lady Gay" and "Four Fan Anne". Major Clifford was a member of the 452nd Bomb Group, 729th Bomb Squad of the "Mighty Eighth" Air Force stationed in England. Major Clifford flew 22 combat missions over Germany and 3 mercy missions to drop food supplies over Holland.
My secondary impression is in honor my other Grandpa, Captain Reid Woodford who was a member of the Air Transport Command's 5th Ferry Group stationed in India ferrying medium bombers and fighters of all types and transporting aviation fuel and other supplies over the "Hump" to various air fields where needed. Something of interest, when Captain Reid Woodford was first attached to the ATC before going overseas, he was stationed at Love Field in Dallas, Texas, home of the Air Transport Command.
