Lt.Claude J Shaffer

Served with the 318th FG in the 333rd FS.Piloted P38's and P47's during the Marianas Campaign.Shot down over Truk Island and outside of Tokoyo Japan. Was second plane to land on Saipan.Received Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart,Oak Leak Cluster.Was killed Feb 11,1961 outside of Kansas City in an auto crash.It was said by his father that he could fly an airplane thru the eye of a needle but was a lousy driver behind the wheel of a car.At the time of his death he was a passenger in the car that was struck broad side.
